ABOUT
ALADAGLAR
|
The Ala Mountains (Aladaglar) are the highest and most compact group
of peaks in the eastern Taurus mountain range. The principal peaks
well above 3,700 metres (Demirkazik 3,756 metres, Kaldi 3,748 metres,
Kizilkaya 3,726 metres). Part of the great Alpine-Himalayan fold
system on a N/NE-S/SW plane, this small group of summits fall between
latitudes 37 42' - 38 11' north and longitudes 35 02' - 35 28' east.
The southern part, composed of Mesozoic layers (Triassic and Jurrassic)
is known as the Beyaz Aladaglar (White Aladaglar), and has higher
summits and steep faces of interest to climbers. The Beyaz Aladaglar
make up no more than a thirty-kilometre-long section of the entire
chain, occupying an area less than 750 square kilometres.

In the summer, the valleys and slopes are occupied by thousands
of sheep and goats, and the black wool tents of the Yoruk are
cluistered around the watersources. Butter and yoghurt are made
from the milk and some of the women are highly skilled makers
of kilims, or flat-weave rugs. |
