The easiest way to explore the Kackar is
to join a trekking expedition; lots of international agencies
offer Kackar expeditions. Second best is your own expedition;
or if you are experienced, trek with a friend. Here are some
things to look out for:
|
1. The best base or start
point is Yaylalar. If you start from Yukara Kavron ar
elsewhere on the north side, you will probably start
in mist or rain.
2. To see the best of the Kackar you have to
camp. One or two days in camp are not enough; ideally
you should have a series of short expeditions linked
by comfortable nights at a pension.
3. Check that your company supports the trek
with mules, otherwise you will end up carrying your
packs! An average trek needs 1 mule to 4 trekkers.
4. Your guide should be fluent in your language,
fluent in Turkish, and have plenty of experience in
the area. An 'imported' guide doesn't have the experience
to predict the weather or deal with local problems.
5. Check the trek grade, know your own ability
and check that you will fit into the group.
6. It's better to carry a small quantity of high-quality
equipment than masses of second-rate stuff. Boots and
waterproofs should be the best. See Equipment.
7. Getting to the Kackar involves a long journey
from almost anywhere - so take a break to get over your
journey, and stay for longer. See How to get there.
